FAQ: AMX Electric Bike: The e-bike for cities
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Indiegogo!

How fast is the AMX?

The AMX accelerates considerably faster for the same given effort than a non-electric bike. In the UK & EU, the regulations in place mean the motor can assist you up to 15.5mph (25kph), but due to the AMX’s lightweight design and rear-wheel-drive motor you can accelerate beyond this as easily as you would on a non-electric bike. In the US the motor is permitted to assist you through to 20mph (32kph). The AMX will be restricted to 15.5mph unless local laws allow a higher cut-out.

Does each AMX have a unique serial number?

Yes. Each frame and battery have a unique serial number.

Is there a benefit to the AMX even on a short commute?

Heck yes! The AMX puts the level of effort required into your hands with its 5 levels of assist. Fancy more of a workout? Drop the assist down to Level 1/2. Woken up on the wrong side of the bed? Level 5 will take the pain away. Adjust your effort to suit your mood!

What happens if my battery goes flat?

It rides like a normal, single-speed bike. This is something that we love about our geared rear-wheel-drive motor; there is no motor resistance when riding without power. Add to this that the AMX weighs from as little as 12.3kg (whilst most electric bikes weigh in at considerably over 20kg) and you really notice the difference versus standard electric bikes. If you get caught out and your battery goes flat its no big deal.

Can you lock the battery to the bike?

No. All battery locks that we tested could be defeated in minimal time with basic tools. Given that AMX’s battery can be removed in seconds, weighs just 0.9kg-1.3kg and easily fits into most bags; we incorporated a system that allows you to remove one of the most expensive parts of the bike, and greatly reduce its vulnerability to theft. You can’t steal something that isn’t there.

Does the AMX have regenerative braking?

No. The type of motor required for regenerative braking is not only heavier and more expensive but also suffers from ‘cogging’. Cogging is a term used to describe the resistance that the rider would have to pedal against if the battery goes flat and feels like cycling through treacle. Our “geared” motor is compact, lightweight and feels just like a regular bike. And as the battery can be recharged at your desk from empty in under 3 hours, there’s no need to compromise the riding experience.

What cells are in the battery?

Standard Battery: Samsung/Sanyo Extended range Battery: Panasonic Note that the exact model of cell is subject to change according to the supply chain.

How is the AMX delivered?

The AMX is shipped to you with a comprehensive digital assembly guide and requires some final assembly to get it from the box onto the road. If you are unsure of your technical ability, we strongly recommend that you visit your local bike shop to have you AMX assembly checked out before you ride, or delegate to a more mechanically-minded friend.

Who is responsible for any additional taxes, duties or VAT/GST?

We will calculate the duties and taxes due prior to shipping, but the backer is responsible for these costs. By dealing with this prior to shipping the AMX can be ‘delivered duty paid’ (DDP) which prevents hold-ups and admin charges at customs. On completion of the campaign, we will implement a fulfilment model to ensure as smooth and efficient a process of distribution as we can with respect to timescales and duties payable.

How much will the taxes, duties & VAT/GST be?

Please check your country’s import duties/VAT/GST before purchasing if you would like to understand what to anticipate. The exact duty applicable varies internationally and can change over time, but all countries have a Trade tariff available which shows the duty due on import - as a guide, electric bikes fall under section 8711 of the harmonised international commodity codes.

Will Brexit affect my shipment or duties?

Almost certainly not. We’re aware many will be considering the potential impacts of Brexit; our view is that at worst this will render any deliveries from the UK akin to trading with any other non-EU nation, but equally, there may be no impact at all. In fact, as AMXs will likely not be shipped from the UK it will in all probability be entirely irrelevant. Certainly, we will consider this when deciding the most efficient method of fulfilling orders post-campaign.

Where will my AMX be shipped from?

Exact fulfilment details will be decided post-campaign to determine the most efficient way to get AMXs to all our Backers. The likelihood is we’ll use regional fulfilment centres to handle distribution, but any final decisions will be based on the most sensible approach at the time.

Can I get a refund?

In the event we are unable to deliver your AMX due to legal or practical limitations on the import or delivery of your bike, we will refund you 75% of the amount of your campaign contribution. You are responsible for determining whether it is legal to import, deliver and operate the AMX in your country. If you wish to cancel your contribution more than 10 days after it was made, we will assess an admin fee of 25% of your pledge and refund the remainder. There will be no refunds after 07/11/2019

How far can I ride on a single charge with an AMX?

The Standard Range Battery on the City provides a 20 mile range at mid-level assist, whilst the Extended Range battery on the upgraded specs provides 27 miles. Many factors influence your range including; terrain, total bike/rider weight, weather, temperature and riding conditions (city vs countryside), and of course the level of effort input by the rider.

On the off-chance you need to go further, you can select the Extended Range battery Add-On to double your reach

What will be provided in terms of an invoice?

Prior to shipping, you will receive an invoice confirming the pledge paid and the balance due for duties and taxes. This confirms the total balance paid but does not constitute a VAT invoice.

What size frame should I choose?

Please see the Size Guide on the campaign story to determine which frames are designed for your height. Please note the frame sizes given are indicative; the exact frame measurements and geometry may vary prior to delivery, but the spec will still be geared for the height-range given in the Guide.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
